I come across good quotes all the time, but this one just struck a chord in me that made me want to share it.
"The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe." - Albert Einstein

hmmmmm
that comes and goes for me i think
Good one to sit with I tell you, it's great.
oh my that is good food for thought.
Had to admit a few things to myself.
that's never fun.
AFOFG baby :-)
I like that he says it is a decision. Love that actually.
Hmmmm, what about indifferent?
The existential point of view can either be depressing or liberating (which is also a choice)
I think indifferent works, but I would wager that when unattended to it goes right into hostile. Just a hunch.
I dated a girl once (young lady, rather) who was a devout existentialist, and her line was "why do all these existentialists whine all the time. If nothing means anything, that means you can do anything, that's rad!"
Thinking about these things is where I came up with my line "Camus is a pussy."
LOL
For me, the existential viewpoint is totally liberating. It means that we are not a priori burdened by external will, whether it be hostile or compassionate. There is neither redemption nor its flip side of sin in such a view -- what matters is what one does moment to moment.
Perhaps 'neutral' is a less charged term than 'indifferent'. The latter often has an implication of carelessness.
I love it when you use "a priori"
go on
(good points btw)
Is that the equivalent of "Oh, Tish, I love it when you speak French!"
Ooh, you dogged me on the reference. I actually don't know if it's the equivalent, I don't know what you are referring to.
Do tell.
I think it means you're about to start kissing your way up his arm.....
Oh yikes.
....
YIKES.
That is wrong on so many levels I can't even begin to address it LOL.
The first level being, I don't have a sasquatch fetish.
and that's just a start LOL.
Bingo, Katye...
Actually, that is Kate -- of Canukistan. Lovely friend to the North.
Cat lover and soon-to-be Portland resident, should the planets align.
they damn well better align - I've already given notice at work >.<
planets? aligning? you gave notice without consulting??
I jest!
looking forward to meeting you when you gets "here", even tho' I'm officially not 'there' any more. . .
I never thought about whether the universe was friendly or hostile, and now I'm scared to death all the time. The last thing I need is another inanimate object hostile towards me. Thanks a lot, Albert.
