Rocks trucking around on the playa, by themselves

Bentley sent me this excellent article from geology.com about the sliding rocks of Racetrack Playa. There still isn't an explanation, I love natural events for which there are not yet explanations.

Enjoy nature's anomalies,

Bp

the pictures are brilliant - easy to imagine those rocks possess some attitude - wait, maybe that's just me this morn, hehe. . .

I too appreciate the 'unexplained,' especially as the tales of explained phenomena come up for re-vision so as to fit neatly back into the dream

Actually there are 2 excellent explanations: wind or wind & ice, just no one has observed the phenomenon (Oh WAIT: add a third, maybe its UFOs!). I especially like how some tracks abruptly change direction, one photo shows a 90° bend in its path. Beautiful photos.

Yo, Pat, it's good to have another skeptic in the house... !

I think the wind/ice hypotheses sound like they'll hold some weight. Freaking cool no matter how it happens.

I think Chuck Norris is involved.....

There's a smaller racetrack in Surprise Valley, and right here at the border of Oregon and CA, I drive by one every Friday. It only has two rocks- used to have one!- that move, but it's really cool to have our own little one and be able to see it every week.

chuck has to be involved.

Awesome National Geographic article on Death Valley last month that talks about these rocks.

Pril, I'd love to see some of these guys. Maybe I'll head down to that part of the state again sometime soon, it's been many years.

As for the chuck norris hypothesis... I figured it was a foregone conclusion he was involved.
