The illusion of the solidity of matter

Found this quote in my old fire lookout journal:

....these high velocities make the atom appear as a rigid sphere, just as a fast rotating propeller appears as a disc. It is very difficult to compress atoms any further, and thus they give matter its familiar solid aspect.

---The Tao of Physics p. 58

Enjoy matter's "familiar solid aspect,"

I've been doing quite a bit of studying of post-Newtonian physics. It is fascinating as well as informative regarding one's metaphysics.

Perhaps most interesting to me and my world view is this reduction of relativity: nothing is special; the same laws govern everything and everyone.

This is the ultimate extension of Copernicus' discovery that the universe was not geocentric, as it says that earth is not special, humanikind is not special, you and I are not special. We may be unique, but our place in the order of things is no more and no leass that the place of any other.

Some find this frightening; I find it liberating.
