Ice photos

Thought I'd start off the week with some beautiful photographs. The original post calls these 'frozen waves' which, though poetic, I believe is a misnomer. There are a number of other photos at the link.

Enjoy the beauty of solid water,

So, not frozen waves. But what?

I'm tempted to call it pack ice or glaciers... I'll refer it to my friend who'se been to Antarctica and see what he says.

Where were the photos taken? What time of year? Want altitude? Name of glacier? How can anyone have the skill to get their butt to such a location and have NO IDEA to what they are looking at?!!

Bitching aside here is my best guess>>

The photos are glaciers, possibly terminuses. Deep blue, old ice indicates that it is glacier ice. If they are terminuses, from the steepness, I’d say they are located at high latitude (Polar glaciers have steep terminuses due to the low sun angle delivering more energy to the cliff faces than the top surface). I’d say the accumulation area of the glacier doesn’t have steep cliff faces to contaminate the ice with rocks, apparently not too much dust blowing around either. They sure look polar, but there are few polar glaciers where humans can easily visit. Or –perhaps & most likely-- these “waves” might be formed by partially consolidated blocks down stream of an ice fall. Glaciers flow very similarly like water only very slowly: where the glacier is constricted it flows faster, wider areas the flow slows. When they flow over a cliff there are “ice falls” and the ice blocks re-organize back into a glacier “stream.” Perhaps the “waves” are un-assimilated blocks melting and merging into in the ablation zone. The flat area, where the people are standing, looks like a frozen lake: either on top of a glacier or at the glacier terminus.

I whish I knew more about the area, I’d love to hike around there.

I know nothing about the photos, which is a shame. They are in a few places on the internet, but none tell these details so far.

My Canukistani operative is on the job, but so far has only been able to find this page with the same pictures and a *bit* more information. But not what you requested.

But rocking comment sir -- thanks so much for taking the time!
