This article outlines a study in which researchers hypothesized and then created a process by which aquatic animals could get caught in tree resin. This has long been a mystery to scientists who studied amber -- how did aquatic animals end up inside a resin dripping off a tree? Their method (tree near water drops resin into water, aquatic animals get caught in water-borne resin) was simple enough. It also worked like a charm, trapping many if not most of the small aquatic life in the waterways they tested.
